There are few preset limits to human stupidity or credulity. For example, the Turkish police discovered an Istanbul villa where nine women were being secretly filmed in their underwear “after being tricked into believing they were reality TV show contestants”.

The women were apparently made to believe they were being filmed for a Big Brother-type television show, according to the private Dogan news agency. Instead, their naked images were sold on the Internet, reports said. The women had responded to an advert searching for contestants for a reality show that would be aired on a major Turkish television station.

How could anyone be so dumb? Right. Well in Baltimore, not far from the nation’s capital, CNN reports that “two employees at … the liberal community organizing group ACORN were caught on tape allegedly offering advice to a pair posing as a pimp and prostitute on setting up a prostitution ring and evading the IRS.”

The video footage — which has been edited and goes to black in some areas — was recorded and and posted online Thursday by James O’Keefe, a conservative activist. He was joined on the video by another conservative, Hannah Giles, who posed as the prostitute in the filmmakers’ undercover sting. The video shows the pair approaching two women working at the ACORN Baltimore office and asking them for advice on how to set up a prostitution ring involving more than a dozen underage girls from El Salvador. One of the ACORN workers suggests that Giles refer to herself as a “performing artist” on tax forms and declare some of the girls as dependents to receive child tax credits. “Stop saying prostitution,” the woman, identified by the filmmaker as an ACORN tax expert, tells Giles. The other woman tells them, “You want to keep them clean … make sure they go to school.

It’s hard to decide which is more astounding, the height of venality displayed by these so-called “community organizers” or the abysmal depth of their IQs at not even being able to see through the setup. The common denominator in both cases is the character of the wrapper around which both the peep-show house and the street crime consulting outfit were encased. In each case they were surrounded by some magic words and that was enough to keep the illusion going. Unfortunately for many people, things are true because they are packaged in a famous brand. Authorities in Lexington are investigating a shooting that occurred early this morning

According to reports out of Lexington this morning the woman killed is 29 year old Amanda Ross. A source in Lexington told WCLU news police have not confirmed the identity, but the Lexington Herald Leader is reporting a neighbor confirmed Ross’s identity. Very few details have been released. Back in March of this year Ross sought a restraining order against her former fiancée, former State Representative Steve Nunn, ordering him to not have contact with her for a year. California Assemblyman Michael Duvall has been caught over an open mic describing the details of an affair with a female lobbyist whose clients have business on a committee on which Duvall sits, the OC Weekly reports:

Duvall "Duvall, speaking to a relatively mum Republican colleague seated to his  left, apparently had no idea his dais microphone became live beginning about a minute before the start of a cable-televised committee hearing. He was captured in the middle of recounting portions of an affair.  'She wears little eye-patch underwear,' said Duvall, who is married with two  children. 'So, the other day she came here with her underwear, Thursday. And  so, we had made love Wednesday--a lot! And so she'll, she's all, 'I am going  up and down the stairs, and you're dripping out of me!' So messy!'"

Duvall is a staunch 'family values' politician. He "blasted efforts to condone gay marriage" in 2008, according to the paper.

Duvall was an outspoken supporter of Proposition 8, which apparently meant that heterosexual adultery was less damaging to marriage than a committed same-sex couple being able to get legal recognition of and practical benefits from their marriage by the state. Then again, it's OK if you're a Republican. As long as he's voting against taxes and the gay agenda, I am sure that his OC supporters and right-wing paymasters will be happy to overlook ethical lapses and an inability to keep his sexual practices to himself."

I was dying to see the Jon Gosselin interview on Good Morning America today, thinking there had to be some juicy gems in there. Boy, was there ever. (Plus, did anyone else notice, with his jittery behavior and glassy eyes, he seems to be under the influence of something?)

In the three hour interview that was edited down to less than three minutes, Jon told Andrew Chris Cuomo he “despises” his wife. He also acted like a child. His mannerisms and persona seem like a digression from the man Jon was (or at least appeared to be) as recently as last year.

In short, he comes across as a spineless wuss who is angry, bitter and embarrassed by the man he was and maybe, even, by the man he has become.

He’s rockin’ the double earrings, not looking at Cuomo in the eye, interrupting during the interview, getting defensive and being accusatory and, most importantly, trashing the mother of his children.

As I said back when Jessica Simpson blathered on about Tony Romo, I do not think the details of your relationship — any relationship — should be shared publicly. Talking with a few close friends, or your family, is one thing, but telling anyone who will listen how awful — or wonderful — your (former) partner is, is as tacky as bragging about who you know.

It’s September, which means the countdown to the return of network stalwarts is underway – and for comedy nerds, the return of Saturday Night Live on September 26, 2009, is eagerly awaited. Last year saw the departure of Amy Poehler from SNL in a rhyme-dropping big-bellied moose-busting finale, and Kristen Wiig took the mantle of female MVP, clocking by far the most screen time of any cast member last season. This season, she’ll have some relief: two new cast members, comediennes Jenny Slate and Nasim Pedrad.

Over at The Comic’s Comic, Sean McCarthy is reporting that Slate (above left) and Pedrad (above right) have been hired to join the cast for the 35th season, citing “knowledgeable folk” as sources. (We’ve emailed SNL for confirmation but have not yet heard back; that said, in our experience, SNL official releases tend to lag quite a bit behind comedy-circle gossip – see how the news trickled out about last season’s hires Bobby Moynihan and Michaela Watkins and Abby Elliott.)

If true, that brings the ratio to 4:3 – perhaps the best for women in SNL’s 35-year history. (It also sends the hotness factor through the roof – they are both quite lovely! Add to that the rumor that Megan Fox is hosting the season opener, and SNL just got that much more crushable. And yes, we’re including this smokin’ hairless pic of Will Forte in for good measure.) Last season the ratio was 8:4 – 9 if you counted Weekend Update anchor Seth Myers. So, you go, girls.

It’s hardly a surprise that the new hires came in from UCB (Slate in NY, Pedrad from UCBT-LA/Groundlings) – that’s the usual SNL farm team at this point, from which Moynihan, Watkins and Elliott were drawn, as well as fellow castmember Casey Wilson. SNLers are often seen yukking it up across the UCB stage; UCB den mother Poehler was one of the founders, and through her as well as fellow SNLers like Myers and Jason Sudeikis, the two worlds have overlapped more and more in recent years (Poehler’s longtime improv pal, Tina Fey, has also drawn liberally from the UCB well, most notably in Jack McBrayer, aka 30 Rock’s Kenneth the Page.) At least one new writer has been culled from the UCB circuit for this coming season, according to our own “knowledgeable sources” – Christine Nangle, a UCBT Harold team member (see her work here).

No official announcements have been made but there have been rumors swirling for a while that Darrell Hammond was leaving the show; he has provided valuable impression work in his run – particularly last season during the election – but as the longest-running cast member, he probably also comes with a steeper price tag than the raw new blood. That said, cast members frequently drop in for one-show cameos/paydays – considering Bill Clinton’s recent newsmaking trip to North Korea, we may see him crop up sooner than the rumblings would indicate.

Jesse Witten toiled in the tennis minors for five years, in out of the way locales like Brownsville, Tex., at tournaments that didn’t have ball boys, let alone fresh cans of balls, just to win $1,200 at most.

He tried qualifying for the United States Open, but was unsuccessful 10 out of 11 times. At the beginning of this year, when a software security company from his hometown of Naples dropped its sponsorship of him, Witten even considered quitting the sport.

But he is the archetypical journeyman at age 26, an 11-time All-American from Kentucky, and on Thursday, he looked up from his long, rugged path and realized he had arrived in the third round of the Open.

Witten defeated Maximo Gonzalez, ranked No. 79 in the world, 6-7 (3), 6-4, 7-5, 6-2, on Court 11 Thursday. The victory assured him of at least a $48,000 paycheck just for winning two rounds.

“I think,” Witten said of his pricey digs at the Waldorf, “they’ll extend my reservation for another couple of days.”

Witten has already played five matches, including the three he won in the qualifying round last week, and the upset in the first round over No.30-ranked Igor Andreev. It was his first tour-level victory of his career.

“I’m trying to prove to some people I can play a little bit,” Witten said. “It’s been a long time and a lot of guys doubted me, so it’s nice.”

He does not remember all the small towns he saw, all the matches in front of few fans he played. “You just have to go out there and put the time in and get through it so you can get to here,” he said.

His mother, an optometrist, and his sister, a school teacher, flew to New York in time to see his victory on Thursday. They could watch Witten play Novak Djokovic, the No. 4 seed in the next round (Djokovic plays another qualifer Carsten Ball, of Australia Thursday night).

But Witten is not feeling the pressure like he was earlier in the year. He gave himself a six-month deadline this winter to produce on the futures and challenges circuits or find a new career.

Legendary Tigers announcer Ernie Harwell has inoperable cancer and he and his wife have decided to let the cancer run its course. The Detroit Free Press broke this bummer of a story and writers all over the sports world are saying the same things: Ernie Harwell is an absolute gem on an individual and this is just plain sad.

I don’t have a lot to say about this really. I think most people have the same sorts of thoughts of Ernie..and, aside from Bo Schembechler, have you ever heard of anyone that didn’t love Ernie Harwell? There are very few people you can say that about, especially someone who has lived in the public eye.

Ernie Harwell was and always will be the voice of the Detroit Tigers. I don’t think you’ll find anyone who can deny that. He is one of those public figures that you feel like you know. I’ve never met Ernie, but I’m sure I’ve spent a few days of my life listening to him speak. This is tough.

Best of luck to Ernie, his wife, and the rest of his family as they work through this difficult time. However, I can pretty much guarantee you won’t hear one sad word from this strong man as he fights this battle.

World’s longest golf course

The world’s longest golf course, stretching along 1,365 kilometres of desert highway with holes at 18 towns and service stations, is to open in Australia this year, organizers said Tuesday.

The Nullarbor Links, which will span two time zones and measure more than the entire length of Britain, is expected to be completed next month and will host its inaugural tournament on October 22.

“We’re very excited about it. It’s been a long time coming and a lot of effort,” project chairman Don Harrington said. “This is the longest golf course in the world. It’s unique terrain, there’s something for everybody.”

The course, conceived five years ago “over a couple of beers,” is meant to attract tourists to the Eyre Highway which traverses the desolate Nullarbor Plain and hugs part of Australia’s southern coastline.

Golfers will stop at one roadhouse, play a hole, then drive on to the next tee — 100 kilometres down the road in some cases. The par-71 course will take three or four days to complete with each player awarded a certificate.

Each hole will showcase a local attraction, from whale-watching to ancient fossil beds and a working sheep station, and include sights such as the Big Kangaroo statue at Border Village straddling South and Western Australia.

“There’s a lot of history and you can see all of that on a golf course,” Harrington said.

“Both Australian tourists and golfing enthusiasts around the world have shown support for what we’re doing.”

The course was the brainchild of Bob Bongiorno, who was managing a roadhouse at remote Balladonia when he came up with the idea.

Bongiorno, now living in Kalgoorlie at the course’s western end, said he tried hitting a few balls when he first moved into the Outback but got sick of encountering spiders when trying to retrieve them.

Huge fire of Santa Cruz

A huge wildfire near the town of Bonny Doon, in the Santa Cruz Mountains 70 miles south of San Francisco, threatened homes Wednesday night and into Thursday morning (August 13) as authorities struggled to bring the blaze under control.

Local media reported that over 250 homes had been evacuated as the fire spread. Along with reverse 911 calls, police were going house to house to make sure residents had left the area.

Over 300 firefighters were tackling the blaze, with more crews en route from Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, San Benito, Monterrey County and Santa Barbara. One report claimed that the flames from the blaze could be seen from mountains north of San Francisco

As of 12:30am Thursday, the fire was heading towards the coastal town of Davenport, and authorities were considering further evacuations.

Chapter 3

“Look at this–someone’s been here on horseback,” I noticed about half way down the west side of Wolf Lake.

Carlson bent over and studied the ground. “Yeah, I’d say a single horse.” He stood up and called out, “Dawes, Mason, we might have something here.”

Carlson dropped the stakes he was holding on the ground and I laid the tape beside them. Smoke and Todd Mason took a break from their tasks and joined us. We all studied the hoof patterns.

“Looks like a guy was riding along and stopped here . . . the hoof prints follow down to the water. Probably letting the horse get a drink. On the other hand, could be to throw a leg in the lake,” Smoke added.

I had been thinking the same thing. Mason and Carlson both nodded.

“A lot of people ride the trails in the park, Smoke. I saw a couple unloading horses from their trailer when I drove through yesterday,” I said.

“It is a great place for riding,” Mason said.

“Ever take a cast of horse hoof impressions?” Smoke asked.

“Nope.” Carlson and Mason agreed, shaking their heads.

“It’ll be a new one for you, then.” Smoke got down on his hands and knees and perused the prints. “You’re the farm kid, Corky. These hoof prints tell you anything?”

“About the horse?” I studied for a moment. “Well, it was barefoot, meaning it didn’t have horseshoes on. These ridges are most likely ‘grass rings’ because they run all the way around the foot.” I waved my hand over the hoof pattern.

“What does that mean?” Smoke asked.

“That the horse is pastured and when there are changes in the weather conditions–you know, moisture followed by periods of dryness in the pasture–they develop. Temperature changes are another cause. They’re pretty common. Oh, and it also happens when there is exercise followed by little activity for a while.”

Smoke crawled backward a few steps, then jumped to his feet. “And what does that tell us?”

I shrugged. “The owner keeps his horse in a pasture in Minnesota where the weather fluctuates from hot to cold, wet to dry.”

“Like the rings on a tree? You can tell what the weather was like by how thick the ring is?” Mason asked.

“Not quite.”

“Back to our horse and rider,” Smoke directed.

“Maybe the guy has a busy schedule and rides the horse when he can,” I offered, shaking my head. “I’m not an expert on horse hooves. Oh, look, there’s a crack on the right front hoof.”

The three officers drew closer to me as I pointed out the flaw.

“What’s that from?” Carlson wondered.

“Maybe a harder ride some time–got a little injury. A farrier could fix it. I’m thinking the horse is most likely pastured and probably not ridden a lot.”

“So not a horse from one of the riding stables?” Smoke asked.

“No, they’d have shoes on their horses.”

“So why would a guy not shoe his horse?” Mason asked.

“It’s not the way nature intended, I guess. Shoes can cause lots of problems. Like, they restrict blood flow to the hooves and interfere with the natural expansion and contraction of the hoof when it’s weight-bearing. Plus, the nails driven into the hooves leave holes and weakened areas.”

The sheriff joined us. Engen still sat–more like slouched–in a lawn chair on her patio.

“What’d ya got going here?” Twardy asked.

As Smoke explained, I walked down the road about eight feet then headed back, examining the prints. I paused where the horse had stopped by the lake.

“Hmm. Okay, guys, this is interesting. C’mere.” I waved them to follow me.

“We have a rider going down the gravel road. Not much for impressions where the gravel is packed hard, but here, more on the shoulder, the impressions are deeper.”

The team stayed close. “Then we get to the spot . . . here . . . where the horse goes to the water’s edge, stands there for I don’t know how long, then backs up, turns around and . . .” I led the others as we followed the prints across the road and back south again for a few feet.

“Damn.” Smoke said.

“You got it. The horse was carrying a heavier load before it stopped then it was after it got going again.”

“So, that kinda backs up my gut feeling there is more of our victim in the lake than that one leg we got lying over there.” Smoke took in a big inhale and blew out the air slowly, one of the things he did when he was pondering something.

“What do you figure the horse weighs, any guesstimates?” The sheriff directed his question to me.

“That’s all it would be is a guesstimate.”

I paced off the distance from the front and hind legs when the horse was in a standing position. “I would say the horse is about . . . five feet . . . in length . . . fourteen to sixteen hands . . . around a thousand pounds. With a rider, maybe twelve-hundred. The impressions are fairly deep, but not excessively so.”

The sheriff had been part of the Winnebago County Mounted Patrol Unit and most likely knew more about horses than any of us, but he kept that to himself. Sheriff Twardy was a unique leader. He showed up at all the major crime scenes–he said it was too much in his blood not to be there–but he mainly observed and rarely gave any directions or orders. He trusted his officers to conduct the investigations and come to conclusions based on what they found.

“Yeah, I’d say a thousand, give or take, is about right,” Smoke agreed. “Sheriff?”

The sheriff considered and nodded.

Smoke rubbed his jaw. “What’d you suppose that leg weighs? What, fifteen, twenty pounds?”

I shrugged and said, “Maybe.” I discreetly lifted my right leg slightly and tried to guess its weight, something that had never occurred to me consider until that very minute.

No one else commented, but they appeared deep in thought.

“Twenty pounds wouldn’t add much weight, but, say one hundred-thirty, forty, fifty pounds would be enough to explain the deeper depressions.” Smoke squatted for another close check. “We’ll send the impressions to the BCA for their expert opinion, but that’d be mine, if I had to give it.”

He stood up and stuck his reading glasses in his pocket. “Mason, Carlson, finish marking off the scene and get it photographed. Aleckson, we’ll follow these hoof prints, see where they lead to.”

“You want underwater recovery started?” Mason asked.

“You’re part of that, right?” Smoke said.

“Yup. So’s Carlson.”

“You got your gear with?”

Mason nodded. “We threw it in the unit when we heard ‘lake.’”

“Good. Yeah, why don’t you give Warner a holler. Tell him to load up the boat and assemble the rest of his team. We should have this much processed before the whole place is crawling with deputies. Corky, let’s take that walk. Why don’t you grab your camera?”

Carlson picked up the crime scene tape and stakes and handed the tape to Mason. He helped Carlson finish the job I had started, continuing to the south side of the lake where the shoreline turned east and the road continued south. The sheriff moved to the outside of the marked area.

I found a camera in its case in my trunk, pulled the attached strap around my neck, and caught up with Smoke.

A newer gray Toyota made its way toward us at a fairly fast clip, then slowed when it got closer. The man in the vehicle raised and lowered his hand in a quick wave of acknowledgement and pulled into the Engen’s driveway. He got out of the car and Tara was in his arms a second later.

“Good.” Smoke gave me a relieved nod. “Let’s move.”

We walked south on Abbott Avenue to Eighty-fifth Street and started to turn left. I glanced back to see Mason taking pictures of the horse hoof prints and Carlson writing in a pocket notebook. The sheriff had his arms crossed on his chest, watching them work.

“Wait a minute.” Smoke stopped and pointed. “The prints are coming and going both directions. Let’s head west first.” We walked about one hundred yards to the edge of a small swamp where the horse and rider had been.

“I sure hope this doesn’t mean there’s another body part in this swamp,” I said.

“Doesn’t look good, does it? Better snap some photos of these, in case.”

“The prints look like they came from the direction of the park–rode to the swamp here–turned around and headed up Abbott to Wolf,” I narrated as I took the pictures.

“I guess we’ll find out if that means anything when underwater goes into Wolf. If we don’t find the rest of her in there, this is going to turn into an even bigger nightmare than it already is. We got about four hours of daylight left–a little less. Let’s head east.” Smoke pointed to where the road ended and the grassy area began. “Looks like he stayed on the road for a while, then headed into the park here.”

“Smoke, a horse could have traveled for miles,” I protested, snapping more shots.

“Yeah, I basically wanted to see if he came from the park. I’ll have boat and water load up the four-wheeler–”

I interrupted. “Maybe a mounted patrol would be better–could go where the other horse did. It’d be easier for the rider to see than from a four-wheeler.”

Smoke smiled and tapped me on the back. “Now you’re thinkin’. We’ll head back and I’ll call in the reinforcements.” He opened his phone and hit two digits on speed dial.

“Robin? . . . Yes, it is a real leg . . . Young, twenties, thirties . . . Horrible is one word for it . . . Underwater’s already been called, you should hear them rolling any minute. What I need is one mounted. Who’s on call? . . . Called in sick? Okay, well who’s next on the list? . . . Good. Get him out here, a-sap.”

By the time Smoke clapped his phone shut, we were back on Abbott.

“What would possess someone to cut somebody up?” I asked, hypothetically.

I had some knowledge on the psychology of why.

“Very, very sick people are possessed in the most bizarre ways. Has to be the first dismemberment case in the county’s history–that I know of anyway. The sheriff said it’s the first in his thirty-one years.”

“Makes Alvie Eisner look a little less crazy,” I thought out loud.

“Yeah, right.” Sarcasm oozed through his words. “Don’t go down that road or you’ll drive yourself crazy trying to figure out the motivations of society’s sickos.

I stopped to watch Smoke during his recitation. “Okay! Where did that come from?”

“Alexander Pope? The name is familiar, but–”

“You’ve heard him quoted a lot. He’s the guy who wrote ‘a little learning is a dangerous thing’, ‘to err is human, to forgive, divine’, ‘fools rush in where angels fear to tread’, ‘hope springs eternal.’”

I smiled and nodded. “Oh, he’s the guy? Well, thank you, Professor Dawes.”

Smoke bent over slightly in a mock bow. “Any time. Change of subject: since you brought up our least favorite inmate–let me reiterate–I do not want you seeing Eisner. Period. She had her chance to spill her guts. You are not at her beck and call, little lady.” Smoke hit the palm of his hand with the opposite fist. “My insides turn over every time I remember how you looked after your fight with that monster.”

“All right, detective. We both know we’re not going to settle this today. Let’s talk about it later.”

“Yeah.” Smoke studied the lake, obviously thinking about the secrets it may be holding. “What we got going here is priority one.”

On that we could wholeheartedly agree.

This morning I've been testing Google's new search sandbox, which I covered late last night after the furor over Facebook's FriendFeed purchase and new search service launch abated.

In that piece, I wondered whether Google opted to launch the sandbox, which you can access here, because of Facebook's moves.

Matt Cutts, one of the Google engineers behind the new search infrastructure, said this was not the case in a Q&A on his personal blog last night:

He said the new infrastructure has been in the works for months, adding: "I think the best way for Google to do well in search is to continue what we've done for the last decade or so: focus relentlessly on pushing our search quality forward."

I'm positive the search was in the news for months, but I also believe announcing this at 4:14 PDT on a Monday afternoon is not the way you announce a major rewrite of your bread-and-butter business -- unless you want to attract some of the attention rivals are getting over their search improvements.

I'm not going to let that ruin some potentially fun search testing, but I also took to heart Cutts' comment that there won't be user interface or design changes:

This update is primarily under the hood: we're rewriting the foundation of some of our infrastructure. But some of the search results do change, so we wanted to open up a preview so that power searchers and web developers could give us feedback.

So I didn't get my hopes up to see anything special. I first searched for Twitter. In the current search engine, I saw:

There is a concept called the rationale for resistance, and it includes a list of how people justify their actions to themselves and to others. Let’s assume people are answering “yes” to the health insurance question because they are resisting change. If we apply the rational for resistance to health insurance, people want to stay where they are because:

* Their current health insurance plan meets their needs, and so they do not feel threatened. People who believe their comfort and security are threatened will seek change, not those who feel safe. This does not mean people have carefully thought this out. People who have employer-provided health insurance could lose their jobs and their insurance tomorrow. People could also contract a serious condition that quickly maxes out their coverage. Or others could discover that they are among the 29 percent of people with health insurance who are underinsured. Along with back to school shopping, Utahns will be able to shop for health insurance online beginning August 19, 2009. The Utah Health Exchange is a website where Utah residents and business owners can shop, compare, and buy health insurance plans.

Utah’s new health insurance exchange is only the second of its kind in the United States. Massachusetts was the first to institute this type of approach to affordable health insurance.

Governor Jon Huntsman, Jr., signed the Utah Health Exchange into law in March. The health insurance model was created by HB188, and it is one of four health reform bills in Utah designed to improve affordability, help the state progress toward cost containment, and make health care more accessible to nearly 300,000 people.

According to the Utah Health Exchange website, the Exchange “will connect consumers to information they need to make an informed choice, and in many cases, allow them to execute that choice electronically.”

The three main functions of the Utah Health Exchange are to provide consumers with:

* Helpful information about their health care and financing of that care
* A convenient way to compare and choose a health insurance policy that meets their families’ needs
* A standardized electronic application and enrollment process

For employers, the HB188 provides them with an option of depositing money into their workers’ health savings accounts rather than just paying part of their premium. This allows consumers to purchase any health insurance plan that they want.

On August 19, the Utah Health Exchange will begin enrolling up to 150 small employer groups (those who employ 2 to 50 workers) who plan to offer this new option to their workers. * If the lobby is busy, thieves will often take advantage of the distractions to take your things with them.
* If you are staying in an older room which still has the older guest door locks with metal key, one of first signs of how a hotel treats the issue of security is to observe how hotel room keys are controlled. If it is checkout time and a pile of metal room keys are laying on the front desk, the hotel is not too concerned about your security. Anyone can take and key laying on the desk. This is not a big concern if the hotel is using electronic key cards but is if the metal keys have the room number embossed on it. You will find this more prevalent overseas.
* Ask the front desk personnel not to announce your room number. Rather, tell them to write it down or point to it. Your room number is a matter of security, and the fewer people that know your whereabouts, the better. There’s no need to announce it to the entire hotel lobby.
* When registering, sign only your last name and first initial. Don’t use titles or degrees. Makes it harder to determine gender, marital status or profession. If you are a women traveling alone, you might consider booking your room as Mr. and Mrs.
* Don't leave your credit card lying on the check-in counter while you complete your registration. Also make sure the credit card that is handed back to you by the hotel clerk is really yours.
* Instruct the desk not to give out your name and room number and ask for them to call you if someone inquires about you.
* Immediately upon check in, get two business cards or matchbooks with the hotel name and address on them. Place one by the phone in the room so you know where you are and keep the other on you when you leave so you know where to come back to. If you get lost, you have the address and phone number handy. There is nothing more frustrating than telling a cab driver to take you to the "Marriott" and they ask which one?? That could be one very expensive cab ride. * Place your room key in the same place every time, preferably close to the bed.
* If you have to leave the room in a hurry due to an emergency, you won't have time to be searching for your key. Also, you'll need the key to get back into the room.
* When inside a hotel room, for whatever length of time always use the deadbolt. If the room does not a dead bolt or heavy-duty security clasp but has a chain, twist it to take up the slack before latching it.
* The door to your room must never be opened by anyone unless the guest is absolutely known.
* If you receive a phone call to your room and the person states they are with the hotel and need to come to your room and repair something, use caution. Always get the employees name and call the front desk to verify that it was a legitimate employee who called you and they do in fact need to come to your room. Some criminals are known to where hotel uniforms or pose a plainclothes security. The best bet is to be your own security guard. When you think of luxury executive saloons, one car always comes to mind, the BMW 5-series. A class leader since its inception, the 5-series remains a crucial car to BMW. With the current E60 5-series introduced back in 2004, BMW is preparing the sixth-generation model to be revealed in 2010. It will be a tough job for the designers as well as the thousands of engineers working across BMW’s development centers to renew the current model, a car that already resides at the edge of the technical front line.

The new design is critical for BMW’s design manager Adrian van Hooydonk and his team, who have to create an exterior that radiates the brand’s distinctive design values and at the same time feels new and fresh. Using information from various sources, these renderings were compiled by our partners over at Sweden’s Auto Motor and Sport and their illustrator Radovan Varicak, giving us a preview of what the final version will look like.
The front-end will likely feature a more upright kidney grille in order to comply with stronger pedestrian protection laws, while the headlights won’t be stretched out like on the current model. BMW’s characteristic interaction between convex and concave shapes will still be emphasized, and will be clearly indicated in the engine hood’s lines.

The rear roofline and C-pillar connects more fluidly to the trunk lid, which is now devoid of the Bangle-butt that was so universally derided with the E60 model. Parts of the tail-lights continue onto the trunk lid in order to strengthen the impression of width. We must say, this design is very pleasing and if BMW’s car looks anything like this, we sure it’ll lure back any customers loss to its rivals because of the controversial styling of the former E60.
The new 5-series is being built off an entirely new chassis, with double wishbones in the front, like on the new X5. The move is designed to give better control and road grip around corners, according to the chassis engineers. With the aid of the extremely fast Flex-Ray automotive network communications protocol, the adaptive shock absorbers is set to become more effective, as will active steering.

BMW will also be updating its iDrive system for the new 5-series, making life a little easier with the addition of yet another pair of programmable buttons. Those that think the standard 5-series isn’t sporty enough will have to wait for a few more years until the new M5 turns up with its V10 motor and more power than the 507hp offered in today’s edition. The M version will be the only 5-series model offered with a new dual clutch gearbox (similar to VW’s DSG technology).

The standard version will instead be fitted with an 8-speed automatic transmission that will take the fight to Lexus. This gearbox is being developed by ZF, which will also manufacture a new four wheel drive system that will feature in the new Five. A new 5-series wouldn’t be complete without the introduction of more electronic driver’s aids, and this time BMW is bringing Dynamic Performance Control to the table. The system actively distributes torque between the wheels, depending on how the car acts during a turn. The result is increased security and the ability to handle larger side forces. The new differential will also come in the new 3-series and potentially even the 1-series as an option.

A full-hybrid system, featuring an electric motor in parallel with an engine, is not currently planned for the new 5-series, which instead is likely to feature the same system already used in the 1-series. This light-hybrid system consists of an electric starter motor that’s connected to the crankshaft and can function as both a generator and a propulsion system, spinning the engine during initial off the line acceleration. The light-hybrid will be available in both diesel and petrol versions and expect a new V8 diesel engine to make its debut in the next-gen model.

The two-mode hybrid transmission that was developed by BMW together with General Motors and DaimlerChrysler is mostly aimed at bigger vehicles such as trucks and SUVs. The design features dual motors, and an advanced control system that can allow both engines can be turned on simultaneously, and to regenerate electric power during braking.

This two-mode system, however, is not currently planned for the next generation 5-series, although BMW has not eliminated the possibility that a similar technology can be added towards the end of the model’s life cycle. We’ll have to make do with the light hybrid at the moment since BMW feels it has already succeeded in heavily reducing the fuel consumption of their engines. However, it remains to be seen whether or not BMW will be able to reach the EU’s new requirements for average CO2 emissions of 130g/km by 2012.

• no cost-sharing for preventive care,
• no dropping of coverage for serious illness,
• no gender discrimination,
• no annual or lifetime caps,
• extended coverage for young adults, and
• guaranteed insurance renewal.

One of the most appealing arguments for government health insurance is the perception that it's "a sure thing." No matter how powerful reputational incentives are, a private health insurance might go out of business, or fall into the hands of a myopic CEO. With government health insurance, on the other hand, you know that you're covered, right?

This is a prime example of what psychologists call a pseudocertainty effect. Tversky and Kahneman originally explained it using two hypotheticals (my paraphrase):

Hypothetical #1: You play a two-stage game. There is a 75% chance that the game ends in stage 1 and you win nothing. However, if you make it to stage 2, you get to choose between $30 with certainty, or an 80% of $45.

Hypothetical #2: You choose between a 25% chance of $30 or a 20% chance of $45.

Most people take the first choice in Hypothetical #1, and the second choice in Hypothetical #2, even though they are mathematically identical. T&K's explanation: Hypothetical #1 looks better due to a "pseudocertainty effect." People are misled by the fact that the P(A|B)=1, even though B itself is far from certain.

What does this have to do with health care? Well, government health care is a sure thing conditional on (a) getting high-quality care for (b) a treatable ailment (c) in a timely manner (d) without getting a secondary infection... etc. In other words, like private health care, government health care isn't a sure thing at all.

Now you could object, "It's not about a pseudocertainty effect. It's about a higher likelihood of good health with government health insurance." If you go down that route, however, you've opened yourself up to a barrage of tough questions. What evidence is there that government health insurance raises life expectancy - or any other major measure of health? Even if it does, is the extra cost worth it? As Tversky and Kahneman showed, people will pay a lot to go from near-certainty to perfect certainty. They're far less eager to pay an arm and a leg to go from a 45.3% chance of living to 80 to a 45.5% chance living to 80.

My point: While "certainty" is of the most appealing arguments for government health insurance, it's silly. But if proponents stop using it, it's going to be a lot harder to win over public opinion. It's a choice between persuasion and honesty. Take your pick.

Mortgage Best Choice For Good Live, Mortgage rates continued to rise for the past two weeks as good news about the housing markets continues to trickle in. This week new home sales were reported up with the biggest single month increase in 8 years.

Yesterday, Standard and Poor’s Schiller Index showed that home prices appreciated in eight cities and in parts of 38 states. That is great news for the real estate sector which many believe is turning the corner on this whole mess. The overall picture was described as “flat” or “a plateau” but to me that sounds a lot better than “falling”.

Not all the news has been good this week. Poor consumer confidence and lower than expected orders for durable goods are two indicators published this week that remind us that our economy has a long way to go. Durable goods orders fell 2.5% in June, five times worse than expected. If you look at the details, the transportation sector was the key component that led to the bad news. Transportation orders dropped 12.8% mostly due to a huge drop in orders for commercial planes. Remember, as a rule of thumb, poor news indicates less demand which results in lower mortgage rates to attract customers.

Mortgage applications have been off for two weeks in a row due to the rising mortgage rates. The split between purchases and refinances is approximately 50/50. As described in the Home Affordable legislation that came out in April, we need the continuing stimulus of refinances across the country to help provide an injection of spending. Much better than a one time government hand out, if a homeowner is able to lower his mortgage payment $250 each and every month, that is a steady flow of money that can be spent elsewhere.

The mortgage rates on the Home Affordable DU Refi Plus, as it’s called, have jumped in the passed two weeks but still is very attractive for homeowners who obtained their mortgage financing in the spring and summers of 2006 & 2007 and at the end of 2008. To qualify you must be an existing Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac customer with your mortgage paid on time.

The remainder of the week will be very interesting to watch with regard to mortgage rates. Today we have the “beige book” numbers released which are an interesting set of economic indicators published by the government. Tomorrow, unemployment figures will be published and Friday Gross Domestic Product figures will be published. I look for a slight improvement in mortgage rates in the next few days as some of these numbers, outside of the real estate sector, will be negative and that this process of recovering our economy is a long and slow moving one.

Diane Michelle Zamora (born January 21, 1978), is a former US Navy midshipman who is serving a life sentence for her role in the December 4, 1995 murder of Adrianne Jones, a woman Zamora believed was a romantic rival for her boyfriend, David Graham.
Zamora, the oldest child of an electrician and nurse, grew up in Crowley, Texas. She was a member of the National Honor Society and belonged to several clubs at Crowley High School, including the Civil Air Patrol. At the time of her high school graduation in 1996, Zamora was scheduled to attend the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Reared by a very religious family, Zamora reportedly was known as a person who kept to herself while in high school, devoted herself to her studies, and was very careful about whom she dated and with whom she associated. With the exception of David Graham, Zamora found most high school boys immature. Apparently, she very rarely wore makeup at school and although viewed by teachers and former classmates as "not unfriendly", Zamora was not considered a high school socialite.
Friends and family of the couple said that Graham and Zamora were enthralled with each other. Their relationship seemed intense; Graham and Zamora began dating in August 1995 and only about a month later they announced their engagement to their families. Graham and Zamora planned to marry each other in the year 2000, shortly after their scheduled graduations from their academies. Some friends and relatives, however, thought Graham and Zamora had an unhealthy obsession with one another. According to reports, Zamora supporters claim that Graham dominated the relationship, always having his arm around Zamora and even allegedly refusing to let her family members hug her during her high school graduation.
According to David Graham, on November 4, 1995, he had sex with Mansfield High School track teammate Adrianne Jones. The two had their encounter after Graham parked his car behind an elementary school while driving Jones home from a track meet in Lubbock. Guiltridden over his infidelity, Graham confessed the cheating to Zamora around December 1. An enraged Zamora allegedly demanded that Graham atone for his transgression by killing Jones.
Law enforcement officials associated with the case, such as Grand Prairie police sergeant Alan Patton, who took Zamora's confession, have stated the sexual encounter did not actually happen, but was invented by Graham to provoke his girlfriend to jealousy:
For those who don't remember, this was a totally brutal, unnecessary murder. David had lied to Diane about an alleged sexual tryst that never happened with Adrianne Jones. If he had said, 'I was just kidding, I was just trying to make you jealous,' Adrianne Jones would still be alive today."Sgt. Alan Patton, Grand Prairie Police Department
On December 4, 1995, Graham and Zamora carried out their plan. Around 10:30 PM, Graham called Adrianne Jones and arranged a date. Unbeknownst to her parents, Jones sneaked out of her house later that night to go out with Graham, who picked her up outside.
Prosecutors say that Graham then drove to a deserted road near Grand Prairie, Texas. Zamora was hiding in the hatchback of the car. According to reports, the original plan was that Zamora would come up behind a seated Jones and snap her neck. Graham would help her dump the body in a nearby lake. Graham and Zamora planned to tie [weights to Jones' body so that it would sink to the bottom of the lake.
However, things did not go as planned. Apparently, when Zamora grabbed Jones, a struggle ensued. Graham tried to snap her neck by turning it as is done in movies, but found it to be ineffective. Zamora then hit Jones in the head with a weight, but Jones somehow managed to get out of Graham's car and run away. According to his confession, Zamora told Graham that he could not let Jones get away. Graham took his gun, tracked Jones down in the field, and shot her twice in the head. According to Graham's confession, when he returned to the car, he and Zamora exchanged "I love you's." Then, Zamora allegedly told Graham, "We shouldn't have done that, David." They then disposed of their bloody clothes and went home. Adrianne Jones's body was discovered the next day.
Graham's report of having sex is in unfounded in fact. It is merely suspicion. Police found Jones' blood inside the car, splattered on the passenger door. Zamora claims that the first time Jones was struck was outside the car, by Graham. Reportedly, Diane Zamora hit Jones in the head with a dumbbell. She ran out of the car, with the blow to her head and then across the street. Skull depressions in Jones' head matched a strike in the head with a dumbbell. Supporters of Iran's defeated presidential candidate Mir Hossein Moussavi protest on Sunday.

"They are chanting slogans -- 'Death to the dictator' " -- said a witness who CNN will not identify for safety reasons.

"We are here. We will not leave the scene until our presence is known."

The country's government-funded Press TV was among several media outlets Monday that quoted the Interior Ministry as saying it had declared such a march illegal.

But Moussavi's supporters, in messages on social-networking sites, indicated the rallies would continue with or without the blessing of the administration.

Tens of thousands of people around the world championed them on social-networking Web sites and urged friends to wear green in solidarity.

TEHRAN, Iran -- He was surrounded and pleading for them to stop but six men with clubs, batons and metal rods kept battering a young Iranian man with ruthless force. The swing that keeps replaying in my head was the black baton that smashed the man in the skull behind his left ear.

An eyewitness says the hatred is palpable on both sides in the streets of Tehran.

Seconds earlier the man had dared to stand up to the baton wielding men because they had shoved a 14-year-old girl. For his chivalry he got one of the most savage beatings I have ever seen at the hands of four Iranian riot policemen and members of the Baseej, Iran's plain clothed volunteer militia.

"To hell with Iran," he said as he sat beaten and battered along the sidewalk. "This is not my government. This is not my country."

A grown man who watched the beating burst into tears.

This was a glimpse of the ugly aftermath of Iran's presidential elections, which sparked outrage among supporters of candidate Mir Hossein Moussavi.

Moussavi's backers are calling President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's landslide victory a sham. They're demanding the vote be annulled. The government's response has been a ruthless and violent crackdown.

For eight chaotic hours I saw the two sides clash throughout the streets of Tehran. These were Iranians versus Iranians, but the two sides were worlds apart in appearance, ideology and brute force.

Moussavi's supporters were mostly young 20-something men and women. They were college students, young professionals with degrees demanding social freedom, a better way of life, and better relations with the West.

Two teenage girls carrying bricks had French manicured fingernails and designer sunglasses. The protesters threw objects, burned trash bins, honked their horns and chanted "death to the dictator!"

They were loud, until they heard the roar of the motorcycles.

The motorcycles belonged to two groups of Ahmadinejad supporters: Iran's riot police and the Baseej.

The riot police looked like modern gladiators, muscular and menacing with camouflaged uniforms, black boots, black bulletproof vests and black shielded helmets. They rode in pairs. One drove while the other wielded a club or a baton. They swarmed crowds of rowdy protesters in packs of about 20, beating anyone who got in their way.

On several occasions I saw female Moussavi supporters plead with their male counterparts not to run away. But they almost always did. They were clearly intimidated by the brutal show of force.

The Baseejis were just as ruthless. Those who didn't ride on motorcycles walked the streets in large packs carrying clubs. They didn't wear uniforms, so they could easily ambush protesters. They beat one protester so badly that he collapsed in the middle of an intersection and trembled uncontrollably. I saw one battered young man crawl into the lobby of an apartment building, curl up under the stairwell and sob. He had welts on his forehead and bruises up and down his arms.

"They hit me with everything," he said as he gasped for air. "They hit with clubs. They hit me with chains."

When the two sides weren't throwing objects at one another, they were hurling insults. I heard and felt the hatred on both sides.

During a Saturday afternoon news conference Ahmadinejad compared the violent crackdown against the protesters to a citation after a traffic ticket.

A few hours later thousands gathered in midtown Tehran to hear Ahmadinejad deliver a victory speech. The re-elected president said the elections belonged to Iran's people.
